Harry's Magic Tables Level Backgrounds

In the original Harry's Magic Tables book, each of the multiplication tables, 3 times, 4 times, 5 times etc have their own rhyme. For example, the 3 times tables are all flying rhymes and the 4 times tables are all running rhymes. The game section of the app has a level for each set of rhymes and the background of the levels are intended to represent the different themes.

As the player progresses through the game map, each level theme is along the path they travel through.

The background story of the game involved a fantasy setting, so all the level themes needed to be represented in one drawing.

On the right you can see the different areas represented, the player starts at the floating portal and moves right towards the final level within the castle.

Process

Each of the different level background began life as a sketch inspired by the themes in each of the mutliplacation table rhymes. It was then used to help create the actual background images which were created using a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator.
